The joys of exploring a new area are endless. New faces, new peaks and the same ol’ powder. This winter I have the pleasure of exploring the Kootenay Rockies as I am attending school at Selkirk College. Despite the time conflicts between school and ski hill hours we are still able to get into these beautifully rugged mountains several times a week and enjoy that Kootenay Gold. Red Mountain gets hit by isolated storms, the Rossland range offers steep long descents, Kootenay Pass has incredible alpine access straight from the parking lot, and the Nelson area consistently delivers the white fluffy stuff. Even more there are more mountain ranges yet to be skied straight out the back door. The characters you meet on the skin track are quirky, have a passion for these mountains, and are content to be living simply here. Life is simple here, skin up. ski down. repeat. No need to rush, we’re on Kootenay time here.
